독학과 불계공졸 정태춘은 우리 시대의 뛰어난 싱어송라이터로 거리에서, 광장에서, 그리고 <불후의 명곡> 무대에서 한 시대를 같 은 하늘 아래 살아가는 사람들의 가슴을 울린 가수이다. 지난 세월 나는 답사를 다닐 때면 정태춘의 <북한강에서> 와 그의 아내 박은옥의 <회상>을 카세트 테이프에 담아 달리는 버스 안에서 들으며 시대의 아픔과 고뇌를 같이 하 였다. 그의 노래에는 짙은 서정과 사려 깊은 서사가 하나로 되어 있다는 것이 중요한 특징이고 매력이고 자랑이라 고 할 수 있다. 10여 년 전 그가 홀연히 내게 붓글씨 작업을 보여주었을 때 정태춘의 운율이 마침내 시각적 이미지 로 재현된 것이라고 생각했다. 정태춘은 모든 것을 독학으로 홀로 이룬 것이지만 언제나 마음의 은사는 있었다. 시 는 신경림, 정신은 백기완 선생을 사숙(私塾)하였는데 글씨에서는 추사 김정희의 조형 정신에 의지하고 있음을 알 수 있었다. 추사는 말했다. 내 마음을 다했으면 ‘잘 되고 못 되고를 따지지 않는다.’ 정태춘의 붓글씨에는 그런 ‘불 계공졸(不計工拙)’의 미학이 있다.

In the streets, public squares, and on the stage of Immortal Songs, he moved the hearts of those who lived under the same sky in this era. Over the years, whenever I went on field trips, I would listen to Jeong Tae-chun’s By the Bukhan Riverand his wife Park Eun-ok’s Reminiscenceon cassette tapes in a moving bus, sharing in the pain and agony of the times.
His songs are marked by deep lyricism and thoughtful narrative — that’s his charm, his strength, and his pride. About ten years ago, he suddenly showed me his calligraphy work, and I thought: Jeong Tae-chun’s rhythm had finally been visually reborn. Though all his accomplishments were self-taught, he always had mentors in spirit. He admired the poet Shin Kyung-rim and the activist Baek Ki-wan, while in calligraphy, he leaned on the formative spirit of Chusa Kim Jeong-hui. Chusa once said, “If you’ve poured your heart into it, don’t judge whether it’s good or bad.” Jeong Tae-chun’s calligraphy embodies this bulgyegongjolaesthetic.

郑泰春是我们这个时代杰出的唱作人，虽然他是自学成才，遵循“不计工拙”的美学，在街头、广场乃至《不朽的名曲》的舞台上，打动了与他生活在同一片天空下的人民的心。过去我在进行田野考察时，总会在行驶的巴士上，播放他和妻子朴恩玉的卡带，聆听《在北汉江上》和《回想》，共同感受那个时代的痛苦与苦闷。
他的歌曲充满深沉的抒情性与深思熟虑的叙事，这是他的重要特征，也是魅力与骄傲。十多年前，他突然向我展示了他的书法作品，我当时就想，这正是郑泰春韵律的视觉再现。他虽然全靠自学成才，但心中一直有精神上的恩师。他尊敬诗人申庚林、精神导师白基玩；在书法上，则可看出他依托于秋史金正喜的造型精神。秋史曾说：“只要尽了心意，便不论工拙。”郑泰春的书法正体现了这种“不计工拙”的美学。
